Avoid the Vortex of Worry

Sometimes we can learn a lot from our children. My oldest son doesn’t worry about much. His attitude is one that many people could emulate to make their lives a lot less stressful. It’s not that he doesn’t plan, prepare or execute on his goals because he does, but he spends no time worrying about things he has no control over. If something unexpected happens, he makes an adjustment and keeps moving forward toward his goals. If you ask him about his seeming lack of worry, he will tell you it’s not worth his time to worry, that it doesn’t produce any results and doing so will sidetrack him from his goals. He knows he can’t change anything by worrying, so he focuses on what he can change, especially his attitude. You would be hard pressed to even find him commenting on the negative in a given situation. How can someone so young be so wise?

Now, the only connection my son has to the automotive industry is me, but adopting an attitude like his could be the best thing in your special finance department and your dealership. Instead of stressing and worrying over which finance company will be the next one to close or growling about the decline in advances, take all the strife in our industry in stride by making the necessary adjustments to your operations and focusing on how to reach your goals.

I know this will be challenging for those of you who are constant worriers, but I challenge you this year to take a lesson from my son. Don’t let those negative words and comments suck you into a vortex of worry. Stop worrying about what you can’t change! Focus on what you can! There is still money to be made in special finance. You can still serve the special finance needs of your customers, and thankfully, there are still plenty of them. You just need to focus on the process and execution of your goals to make them a reality.
